Did You Know?

  • You do not need a referral from a GP to make an appointment with me.
  • Counselling and Psychotherapy do not always have to be about the problems we are facing - therapy can also help enhance your life by talking through your aspirations to promote personal growth and self-development.

What is the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?

There are differing perceptions about the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy. However, in general the term ‘Counselling’ is often used to refer to short-term therapy with a specific focus upon an issue or issues, whilst the term ‘Psychotherapy’ is often used to refer to longer-term more in-depth therapy with a broader focus upon long-standing emotional and psychological issues and problems - sometimes looking from the perspective of childhood. On the subject of difference the UKCP makes this distinction on its website, ' the difference lies in the length and depth of training involved and in the quality of the relationship between the client and their therapist. UKCP-registered psychotherapists are trained to Masters level. '

Whilst there may be differing perceptions, it is important to recognise the large overlap that exists between Counselling and Psychotherapy. Both Counselling and Psychotherapy represent a focused endeavour of working towards the reduction of emotional and psychological distress.
