About Me

Al Skiffington-Smith Counselling and Psychotherapy in CoventryMy practice is based on a sound understanding of Humanistic Psychology, Humanistic Philosophy and, in particular, the Person-Centred Approach. I also draw upon my knowledge of a number of other theories that I have studied both independently, and as a member of a CPD (continuing professional development) group focusing upon integrative, embodied, and relational aspects of the therapeutic approaches and modalities since February 2015.

" UKCP Accredited Psychotherapist (no. 2011163108)
UKCP & HIPC Approved Supervisor
Registered Member MBACP (no. 530312) "

I originally worked in engineering and construction before I changed direction and worked as a Youth Worker and IT tutor until in 1997 I began training as a therapist. Since being awarded my first qualification in 1998 I have continued training, achieving a number of therapy qualifications and gaining experience working in a variety of settings including the non-profit and voluntary sector as well as private practice. I have experience of establishing, coordinating and managing counselling services as well as recruiting staff and delivering training events.

As well as having extensive experience of working with whatever an individual brings to therapy, I have an interest in working with trauma (childhood and adulthood), abuse - in all its forms, self-harm and self-injury, sexuality, sexual identity, gender identity, disability and disabling conditions. I have a deep respect for the differences that exist in people and it is this that reinforces my commitment to promoting equal opportunities as well as working with people in an anti-discriminatory way.

As a requirement for the training I have done, and as a recognised personal need, I also have undergone a number of years of counselling and psychotherapy. I regard this as an essential element of becoming an effective therapist. From this I have first hand experience of how difficult and disturbing feelings can and often do emerge during therapy, as well as first hand knowledge of how necessary and transformative this process can be.

I am a UKCP Accredited Psychotherapist (no. 2011163108), a UKCP & HIPC Approved Supervisor listed on the UKCP Directory, and a Registered Member MBACP (no. 530312). I provide private counselling, psychotherapy and clinical supervision to people from Coventry, Birmingham and Leicester as well as people travelling further afield from the West Midlands, Warwickshire, Leicestershire and surrounding areas. From my varied experience I have developed the ability to appreciate given situations from different perspectives.

I subscribe to the BACP Ethical Framework and the UKCP Code of Ethics, both of which operate a complaints procedure to which I am accountable. I am on two registers that have been accredited by the Professional Standards Authority and I have an ongoing commitment to continued professional development.
